The mantis shrimp's speed and acceleration comes from the exoskeleton - the flexible, saddle-shaped structure in the striking appendage. It acts like a spring, storing elastic energy when the appendage is cocked, and releasing it when the shrimp strikes.
With ten pigments that can detect color, the eyes of the Mantis shrimp are the most sophisticated of any animal; human eyes have only three pigments.
